Thirst – a mission

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can
change the world.  Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”
~Margaret Meade

Thirst, it is our most basic need.  In the society we live in we have been indoctrinated with the expectation of instant gratification. Our basic thirst in the US is always quenched, even if our hunger is not.  For most of us where we are going to get water never even crosses our mind, we entitle ourselves to it, it is a mindless act.  If we think of thirst as basic craving we find it pervades our lives. We crave a doughnut, we crave coffee, we crave love and attention, we crave drugs or alcohol, we crave whatever habit (thought or action) that has ingrained itself in our brains without our knowledge.  And most of the time our solution is to judge the craving, expect to just ignore it and it will go away. But if you are like me, when I am standing in line for coffee and the fresh doughnut from the amazing doughnut factory is staring me in the face, it is damn hard to just ignore my craving.  So maybe I judge it for a minute, than rationalize indulging…and you know how it ends.

I want to demystify the idea that cravings are all bad and we are bad people if we have x or y craving.  Craving, like thirst, is part of life.  The sooner we look at what we crave and why and acknowledge that it is there, the sooner we can make the necessary change or changes that may lead us to a happier life.

I am working with a friend and mentor to create a “how to”  guidebook to change our habits through mindfulness and self-awareness grounded in a process that is simple to follow but not easy to do.   For if we don’t know why we do what we do we can’t change it.  We can only truly change once we learn a new routine that draws on old triggers and provides familiar relief (Charles Duhigg, Power of Habit).

Habit is our bodies intuitive way of conserving energy and controlling our environment, on the one hand it is the biological response to energy conservation.  On the other side of the same hand it is subconscious choice that leads us to separate what is connected to escape inevitable discomfort leading to fleeting pleasure.  And while the pleasure is fleeting the habit persists and endures without us knowing it.  The habits of our thoughtless thoughts have led us to getting in our own way of leading a happy life.  Let’s undo that.  If we can shift these habits of thinking than we change the habit of doing and acting.

Where we come to truly be where we are, seeing ourselves living, breathing, loving, observing the doer, the thinking thinker. Cultivating self-awareness and self- love to build or rebuild one habit at a time leading to a deeper more sustainable happiness for ourselves and the world.  One thought, one habit at a time, micro-bursts of awareness snowballing into freedom.

Come join us on this journey as we look to help people make the changes in their life that will lead to more sustainable happiness.
